ST. LAWRENCE

FEAST: AUGUST 10

Little is known about St. Lawrence, but there is legend of his martyrdom under the Emperor Valerian. Lawrence was a deacon for Pope Sixtus II (martyred by Valerian four days before Lawrence). After the Emperor asked Lawrence to reveal the riches of the Church (material riches), Lawrence brought him the blind, poor, and the lame. Outraged, Valerian prepared a gridiron for Lawrence to be grilled on. After considerable suffering, legend has it that St. Lawrence quipped, “Flip me over, I am done on this side.”

St. Lawrence is the patron saint of leather workers and chefs.
