ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

MEMORIAL: SEPTEMBER 13

St. John Chrysostom (which means Golden-Mouth) was born in the 4th century. He was baptized after his theological studies and subsequently became a hermit. He had to rejoin society due to his poor health from mortifications. He then became a priest and was forcefully appointed Patriarch of Constantinople which was one the highest positions in the early Church.

Because of his preaching, he became very popular with the people. However, he was not shy from calling out the sin of the royalty at that time. He would make powerful enemies that led to his exile. He died in exile in the early 5th century. St. John Chrysostom is the patron saint of preachers.
