ST. CYRIL AND ST. METHODIUS

MEMORIAL: FEBRUARY 14

St. Cyril and St. Methodius were Greek brothers who lived in the 9th century. Methodius was the elder brother and was originally a civil official until he retired to the life of a missionary with his brother Cyril (originally Constantine) who excelled at academics. They began their missionary work in modern day Ukraine, but were eventually sent to Moravia. It was here that they worked tirelessly to bring the Slavs to know Christ. Cyril even got permission to translate worship into slavic for missionary purposes (at the time, you could only worship in Latin or Greek). The brothers died as missionaries, Cyril first and then Methodius. They are the patron saints of the Slavic people.
