ST. JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA & ST. NICODEMUS

MEMORIAL: AUGUST 31

Little is known about these saints other than what we find in the Gospels.

Joseph is described as a wealthy man who was a disciple of Jesus. After Jesus’ death, he gave his tomb for Jesus, the tomb in which the resurrection would occur.

Nicodemus was a Pharisee who secretly met with Jesus at night for fear of the other Pharisees. It is in the dialogue with Nicodemus that Jesus announces we must be born again for water and spirit (Baptism) to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. We also hear the famous passage “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…..”

Nicodemus assisted Joseph and the women at the cross with the burial of Jesus. They are the patron saints of funeral directors and pallbearers.
