ST. BARTHOLOMEW

FEAST: AUGUST 24

Little is known about St. Bartholomew other than he was one of the twelve apostles. Many scholars believe that he is Nathanael who is mentioned in the gospel of John. This possible connection and the listing of the twelve are the only times we see Bartholemew mentioned in the Bible. Tradition tells us that Bartholmew went to India, Mesopotamia, and Egypt to preach the Gospel. He was martyred in Armenia and was skinned alive and beheaded. Many depictions of St. Bartholomew show him holding his own skin.
