ST. MONICA

MEMORIAL: AUGUST 27

Nearly everything we know about St. Monica is from the writings of her son St. Augustine. She lived in the 4th century and was married to a pagan man who was susceptible to bouts of anger. They lived with his mother who also turned her rage toward Monica. She prayed for their conversions for years and was finally successful shortly before their deaths.

St. Monica also interceded for her pagan son Augustine for years. She not only prayed for him, but followed him to stay in contact with him. With the help of St. Ambrose, Augustine was converted and became one of the greatest theologians in the history of the Church.

St. Monica is the patron saint of mothers and abuse victims. In a time where many catholics are falling away from their faith as they enter into adulthood, many parents have asked for the intercession of St. Monica for their children to return.
