ST. JOHN FISHER & ST. THOMAS MORE

MEMORIAL – JUNE 22

St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More were both martyred by King Henry VIII in England over the indissolubility of marriage. When Henry VIII decided he wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon, neither man would stand in support of Henry and his eventual break from the Catholic Church.

Fisher was a priest and the personal tutor of Henry growing up, however, he was Catherine’s most vocal supporter during Henry’s rebellion. He was imprisoned for a year and was named a Cardinal by Rome.

More was an English aristocrat, friend of Henry and a devout Catholic. He was known for his intelligence, good works and being a family man. He refused to support Henry in his rebellion. Both More and Fisher were condemned on faulty charges and were eventually beheaded.
