POPE ST. PIUS V

MEMORIAL: APRIL 30

St. Pius V was born during the height of the Protestant reformation. He first became a brother and eventually became Bishop and Pope. He is credited for many reforms within the Catholic Church in response to Protestant criticism. His reformations include the breviary, the Missal, and the Sacred Music. In addition, he strove for unity within the Church during a time of great rebellion.

Legend has it that Pope Pius had a habit of kissing the feet of Jesus when entering and leaving his room. One day the feet moved and would not allow Pius to kiss them. Sorrowful because he thought it was due to his sin, Pius later found out that someone had poisoned the feet and Christ had spared him. Pius died in 1572 after being Pope for six years.
